A Great Day

Spring is definitely in the air. Tanner had ultimate frisbee tryouts for his club team this weekend and I took him down to Lakewood for them. He was nervous, but also excited. 

Marshall arrived back from Washington around 5:00 so we were both able to go pick him up a decided to go out for dinner. I picked Edgewater Market which has a ton of fun choices and a popping atmosphere. Tanner said a couple of times how cool a place it was. Marshall had Ethiopian, I had empanadas and Tanner had crepes. A good choice for some variety and casual eating. 

Tanner mentioned on a drive home that he had a great day - so glad that ultimate frisbee has provided so much joy for him.

Monday Funday

Beautiful day today. No school for Tanner. An afternoon bike ride to Sweet Cow and bike around Louisville. Mom get together to check in on the college boys - hard to believe they are all finishing their first year of college. 

WSU Tour

We took a bit of time on the sunny Saturday afternoon to walk around the WSU campus. The area around the fraternities and sororities was popping with kids and the spring football game was underway at Martin stadium. It had been some time since we had walked around so it was nice to get reacquainted with the campus and have Tanner have some time on a college campus.

Unsung Hero

The end of year YMSL banquet was Sunday, but Tanner and I had to miss because of the ultimate tourney. Not a big deal, but I would have loved for Tanner to be able to receive his unsung hero award - for his “behind the scenes contributions and inspiring involvement and exceptional attitude.” 

I can’t think of a kid more deserving. Way to go Tanner!

With the help of Marshall, I bought a new car!!! 

It has not been easy to get, but the dealer had the package I wanted in black/black which was one of my preferred colors. 

At the beginning of this year, I didn’t even know what I wanted, but after reading about this car in Edmunds.com and then also seeing other awards (it’s one of Car and Drivers top 10 truck/suvs and Kelley Blue Book’s best luxury compact suv I’m happy with my choice!

Tennessee Water Ski

Drake traveled 6 hours to Hillsboro, Tennessee (unincorporated town of 450) this weekend for the first spring water skiing tournament. 

He took off for the 6 hour drive around 11:00 on Friday - those no Fridays class comes in handy. They stopped at the Corvette Museum (but didn’t go in because it closed soon) and then stopped for dinner in Nashville. 

With only 13 kids making the trek, Drake was skiing for the “A” team. His first jump was at 26 miles an hour and he landed it! He moved up to 28 mph and landed that one too! Because he landed one, he got another hip - this one at 30 mph. Unfortunately, he couldn’t hang on to that landing, but super fun to land 2 jumps!! Miami came away with true first place trophy - Woot! Woot!

Ultimate Tourney

This weekend was all about ultimate frisbee with three games on Saturday and three games on Sunday. We battled wind and cold and tough games on Saturday, but Sunday brought better play and nice weather. A win-win. The team certainly made improvements over the weekend and won the last two games on San day to secure 5th place. 

Tanner worked hard and (mostly) had a good time. It’s nice to see the team making some plays and coming together as a team more. 

The rest of the weekend was filled with seeing friends which was nice. Definitely feeling like spring! 

Vamonos Pest

When Marshall and I were working at CIC (where we met), we were part of a group we called “the fun bunch.”  We were a group of young professionals and do a variety of activities together - lunch, happy hour, etc. One of the members of that group, is in a band now - Vamonos Pest. And they we’re playing at a venue in Lafayette this week. So, I tried to get a group of people to go to support the band (we got seven total so I felt good about that). 

We ordered food and drinks and enjoyed the music and the entertaining dancing. They played music from a variety of decades and Gad really strong vocals and harmony. Quite appropriate that “fun Julia” organized an outing to see a former member of “the fun bunch” who is now a member of Vamonos Pest.

Ultimate Challenges and Ultimate Empathy

Tanner has been having a challenging ultimate season with a lot of inexperienced players. We continue to talk about how he can be a leader, what he can learn from the experience and how to have a good attitude. 

They got their first win of the season against Boulder on Monday which was fun for the team and it was nice to see a variety of different kids involved in the scores. 

Tanner knows a couple of kids on the Boulder team from his club team and he was chatting with one of them about their frustrating seasons. After the game, I said something about seeing him chat with his friend and Tanner said, “I just listened.” Sports are about so much more than winning - that is for sure.

Easter Surprise

Easter has never been a huge holiday at the Peavy household, but we always had an Easter egg hunt. I asked Tanner about dyeing eggs and he decided against that. 

I decided to surprise Tanner with a basket and an egg hunt (there is also an Easter “basket” in the mail for Drake. We had to wake Tanner around noon to play some online cards with Drake, so he had to wait on the hunt (which he was not happy about waiting). 

No movies this year, but some other fun things. It is was a gorgeous day so I got in a nice long walk. We also saw friends on Friday night for impromptu happy hour and hosted neighbors for homemade pizza on Saturday.

National Honor Society

Tanner was inducted into the National Honor Society tonight in a nice ceremony followed by some light refreshments. We are so proud of his hard work in studies and his volunteering.

That’s a Wrap

We had another day at Disney because it was only $100 total to add on an extra day. After going hard for four days, we decided to sleep in and checked out at 11:00. We headed to Hollywood Studios took in the Frozen show and spent the rest of our time in Star Wars land playing the bounty hunter game with the Magic+ band (Tanner’s magic band was an issue given permissions), but he was a great sport. Drake took off around 1:30 and we took off around 4:30. A long trip home for us - getting home around 1:00 am. 

We didn’t need the extra day, but if too much Disney is our biggest regret, I will take it.
