We've now been "in the 'burbs" for over a month. While the boys have had their ups and downs, it has mostly been ups.
Fortunately, the boys are adjusting well to their new school. While I was originally worried about D-man making friends, he has had two play dates and has talked more about friends here at Monarch than he ever did at Highline. You definitely can tell there are a) more boys and b) they are more like D-man. Before school and at every recess, D-man plays football with his buddies. They craft plays and are quite serious about it all. T-man enjoys swinging during recess and has become quite proficient at it.
The P.E. and music programs also appear to be stronger and more enjoyable for D-man (T-man likes P.E.). The boys also have art once a week as well.
Both boys are enjoying the lunches and are trying new things (D-man tried a jalepeno today and enjoyed a tamale last week). The lunch program is outstanding and offers fresh fruit and vegetables everyday and also has a focus on Colorado grown food.
Unlike Highline, the after school program is phenomenal. They provide snack, have time on the playground, and do amazing crafts. The woman is a former teacher and truly cares for children and enjoys her job. Both boys are genuinely sad to see me when I pick them up.
All of this is so important and I feel lucky that these aspects of the boys' development are being met. Today T-man told me about two girls in his class that are his friends ("they are she's Mom"). Unfortunately, the academics is the one piece that is missing for both boys. T-man is learning letters of the day, but his teacher seems aware of the different levels and I think we will be ok (today he told me about "DEAR" - drop everything and read - time at school). D-man is woefully under challenged. We have submitted the gifted and talented application and communicated our concern with his teacher - which has been met with silence......we will be addressing the issue again soon. Now that the rest of the pieces are falling into place, we need to get he kids engaged with the actual classroom. Stay tuned....
Since moving up here, I have had so many compliments on the boys. Gushing from the people running the after school program. The gifted and talented teacher saying what a respectful young man we have and the women at the drop-in care talking about how well behaved the boys are.
In the end, THAT is what matters. Raising caring, generous boys who turn into respectful and happy grown men. All good reminders when I start to freak out about the lack of academic rigor right now. The boys are doing well and I need to be so thankful for what wonderful boys they are! The whole child is what truly matters.
And as a side note, I wrote most of this blog from the sidelines of the Monarch 8th grade football game that D-man truly enjoyed (T-man stayed at the after school program). I think the last time I might have been to an 8th grade football game was wearing a cheerleading skirt......the positive is that these things make our new home feel much more like a community. We will also be attending a Monarch High football game if D-man has anything to say about it. Another way to make this feel like home - that - and the cows next to the school.
