Team Dinner

Recently, it was decided that the varsity team dinners would be reinstated. I didn’t jump on the calendar soon enough and there were only a couple of days left by the time I checked. One was during our 2nd cleaning at the end of April and one was the day after prom so that meant we were left with this Tuesday. 

It required a little scrambling (mostly by Marshall) to pull it off, but we did! Marshall got his new Traeger grill put together Sunday (while watching the Masters). (The old grill is not salvageable because of the fires).

Marshall cooked up a delicious brisket, pork shoulder and homemade bread. I heated up Mac and cheese from Costco, opened chips and cookies and set up the display (I definitely got the easy part). 

While we had to scramble, it was nice to host the first dinner of the year and get to meet the boys (we don’t know many of them as they are younger and/or go to Broomfield). They were all very appreciative and it was fun to have a full house of boys laughing and talking. 

It’s almost hard to remember that doing something like this was not possible just a year ago. Once again, very thankful that D-man can have these “normal” senior activities. 

Forgot to get pictures of the set up before hand, but did snap a few pictures. All 25+ boys were able to eat upstairs - yay! And I didn’t care if they spilled - all the furniture gets trashed in two weeks anyway!

Humble and Hungry

Last night, the Monarch lacrosse team lost a tough one to Lakewood. From start to finish, it was not a great game. On the bright side, D-man took it coast to coast with his long pole and scored a goal in the 11-18 loss. 

Apparently, one of the freshman on the team was not shaking hands with the other team at the end of the game. One of the coaches told a senior on the team about this (and he happens to be staying with us right now as his car is broken down). He said that he told the kid, “you know those words we say in the huddle? Humble and Hungry? Those aren’t just words. They mean something.” 

Losing is hard, but how you handle it speaks volumes. May we all be humble and hungry as we journey through life.

We spent the (windy) weekend watching MOHI ultimate frisbee. The team went 3-3 in very windy conditions. T-man had some great plays and it was fun to watch him playing well and having fun. 

The head coach approached us about having T-man try out for a competitive summer ultimate team. The team is for up and coming players that have great potential and attitude. T-man was beaming from ear to ear. 

D-man came for a bit on Thursday

Coffee Commute

About once a week, I go on a “coffee commute.” It gets me out of the house and gives me some time alone before starting work. Not surprisingly, it usually happens on a Friday and now includes burritos as well. 

This Friday, T-man and I left at the same time and I captured a picture of him biking to school. It is a bit surreal that he bikes past such utter destruction every day. 

The ‘hood

It was a busy place at the high school yesterday. We went to up early to watch a bit of the baseball game and then the girl’s soccer game before watching the lacrosse team beat Chapperal 14-8. We saw some neighbor kids play and also caught up with friends. 

At D-man’s game, his friend John’s family came and the Sager’s also came for a bit. We also caught up with an old coworker (from the company where Marshall and I met) and his wife who came up from Parker for their son’s JV game. It was great to be able to catch up with them during the game. 

I walked home from the game and took a few pictures where you can see where the fire had been. It is truly amazing we still have our home.

It was a great afternoon for an ultimate frisbee game and MOHI came away with the 13-4 victory over Centaurus.

With a canceled lacrosse game today and no practice for T-man, we thought we would take the free time to go out to dinner. We didn’t get to go out as early as we planned as D-man ended up working late given he had no lacrosse game. The three of us chatted and waited for D-man at the restaurant and joked about this being the new normal. Then T-man asked what Marshall and I will do once the boys are gone - Nerf wars and pickle ball came up. We are definitely trying to get the foursome activities all in. 

Last Day Of Spring Break

The long drive home on Saturday was worth a day at home. We got some much needed things done around the house and D-man suggested a family outing (love). 

We had lunch outside at the taco wagon and then did a little hike along portions of Coal Creek and Rock Creek we had not done before. It was a nice day out and we got to update each other on our week of vacation. We wrapped it up with a quick stop at Sweet Cow before heading home. Definitely squeezing in every “family of four” moments we can.

Adulting

We made the most of our last day in Vegas with a day of “adulting.” The kids were also happy to have a day of chilling at home and not running around to various sites and locations. Win-win for everyone! The added bonus? An afternoon at the pool with my sister, her husband, a college friend and folks there to celebrate a 50th birthday party. The pool was not heated, but the 90 degree day certainly made for a fun day. 

We headed back to the house with Subway for the kids and showered up for our evening out. We are at Jaleo, a Spanish tapas place, in the Cosmo. We learned our lesson from Tuesday night and thankfully had a reservation. 

 

We walked the strip a bit, took on the fountains and found a Pai Gow table at the Paris hotel (which I like because it has high ceilings). We walked away collectively as winners for the trip, but I personally didn’t have as much luck on Friday night. But so wonderful to be out for the day before a long drive back on Saturday.
